When you think "belly dancer" who comes to mind? Is it one dancer, over her or his whole career? One dancer in one particular performance or time? Is it a composite of several dancers? A look from here, hip movements from there...?
Do you work towards bringing this ideal to your own dancing? If so, how? Or is it enough to keep them in mind as you develop your own style and dance voice?
Non-dancers, you can have opinions, too. What do you picture when you think "belly dancer"?

I know that when I first started dancing, I had some kind of single picture in my mind of what a "belly dancer" looked like. I don't even really remember anymore, but I'm sure it was something in the Salome/I Dream of Jeanie vein. It seems so silly to think of it!
The longer I've danced, though, the more that has fractured. Now I have in mind something like characters or archetypes that go with different kinds of music: The baladi girl, the golden age movie star, etc. I don't have a one-size-fits all bellydancer archetype anymore. :)
